Arthur Woodley, 1949–2020
The Metropolitan Opera mourns the death of American bass Arthur Woodley (pictured at center above), who made his company debut as Frazier in our new production of the Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess just last year. Arthur also sang the role of Benoit in La Bohème with us last season and was to have appeared at the Met again in future years. Despite his short time with us, Arthur was widely admired for his exceptional talent as a singer and actor as well as for his warm collegiality and kindness. We will sorely miss the opportunity to welcome him back next season, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and many friends.
