Beethoven
Fidelio
Ben Heppner is Florestan, wrongly imprisoned by his political enemy, the evil despot Don Pizarro (Robert Hale) who wants to murder him. But Florestan’s wife, Leonore (Anne Evans), has not given up hope of finding and freeing him. She disguises herself as a young man and gets a job with the jailor Rocco (Jan-Hendrik Rootering), which leads to further complications when Rocco’s daughter Marzelline (Helen Donath) falls in love with her father’s new assistant, very much to the annoyance of her own admirer, Jaquino (Michael Schade). Right and justice finally triumph thanks to the timely arrival of the King’s Minister Don Fernando (Alan Held). Hermann Michael conducts.
