Mozart
Idomeneo
The great Hildegard Behrens leads the cast of Mozart’s early masterpiece as Elettra, the Greek princess thwarted in her love for Idamante—sung by Frederica von Stade—the son of the King of Crete, Idomeneo (David Rendall). Idomeneo finds himself in an tragically conflicted situation: to escape a storm at sea, he vowed to Neptune to sacrifice the first creature he encounters after reaching shore safely—only to be met by his son. Benita Valente is Ilia, the captive Trojan princess who secretly returns Idamante’s love, and John Alexander sings Arbace, the king’s confidant. Jeffrey Tate conducts.
