Barber
Vanessa
Samuel Barber’s opera had its world premiere at the Met in 1958. In this first revival, soprano Mary Costa took on the title role of the beautiful woman who has waited 20 years for the return of her lover, Anatol. But the man who appears is a younger Anatol, her lover’s son, sung by John Alexander. Rosalind Elias as Erika, Vanessa’s niece, and Giorgio Tozzi as the Doctor reprise their portrayals from the world premiere. Blanche Thebom is the Old Baroness and William Steinberg conducts.
