This broadcast of Wagner’s most romantic opera stars René Kollo as the knight of the Holy Grail who arrives in a boat pulled by a swan to defend the innocent Elsa, played by Pilar Lorengar. Mignon Dunn is the dark and malevolent Ortrud who poisons the couple’s happiness, with some help from her husband, Telramund (Donald McIntyre). James Levine leads the Met orchestra, bringing out the shimmer and the thunder of the score, along with every shade of expression in between.
