Verdi
La Traviata
Since bursting onto the scene in 2009 as one of the youngest-ever winners of the Met’s National Council Auditions, Nadine Sierra has risen to become one of her generation’s most captivating artists and has had memorable star turns as some of the repertoire’s most compelling heroines. This continued during the 2022–23 season when she took on another touchstone soprano role, the courtesan Violetta Valéry in Verdi’s timeless tragedy La Traviata. In this performance, recorded as part of the company’s Live in HD series, Sierra headlines Michael Mayer’s vivid production, sharing the stage with tenor Stephen Costello as Violetta’s ardent yet impetuous lover, Alfredo, and baritone Luca Salsi as his father, Giorgio Germont, whose unbending resolve dooms their life together. Milanese maestro Daniele Callegari takes the podium to lead Verdi’s masterful score, which is simultaneously tuneful and heartbreaking.
