Wagner
Götterdämmerung
The culmination of Richard Wagner’s four-part Der Ring des Nibelungen, Götterdämmerung completes opera’s greatest epic masterpiece. In this performance from the close of the 2018–19 season, soprano Christine Goerke stars as Brünnhilde, the warrior maiden whose ultimate sacrifice restores balance to the world. As the opera’s tragic hero, Siegfried, tenor Andreas Schager gives a commanding performance in his Met debut. Alongside the lead couple, bass-baritone Eric Owens is the scheming Hagen, soprano Edith Haller and bass-baritone Evgeny Nikitin are his easily manipulated half-siblings Gutrune and Gunther, mezzo-soprano Michaela Schuster is the Valkyrie Waltraute, and bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny is the malevolent Alberich, who set the entire cycle in motion with the forging of the titular ring. Philippe Jordan conducts a thrilling performance of Wagner’s monumental score.
