Verdi
Otello
The podium of the Met orchestra pit has long welcomed the world’s greatest conductors, and the company continued this tradition of excellence with its revival of Otello during the 2018–19 season. At the helm of Verdi’s explosive late tragedy, charismatic maestro Gustavo Dudamel made his Met debut, in a run of performances that also featured tenor Stuart Skelton—who wowed audiences as Siegmund in Wagner’s Die Walküre later in the season—in the title role and soprano Sonya Yoncheva as his ill-fated wife, Desdemona. As Iago, baritone Željko Lučić completed the accomplished trio of principal singers in this devastating Shakespeare adaptation.
