Boito
Mefistofele
An explosive adaptation of Goethe’s Faust, Boito’s Mefistofele returned to the Met stage for the first time in nearly two decades during the 2018–19 season. Christian Van Horn takes on the nefarious title character with a booming bass-baritone and a healthy dose a panache, opposite tenor Michael Fabiano as Faust, the aging philosopher yearning for more in life. Sopranos Angela Meade and Jennifer Check are the two objects of Faust’s eager affections— the young maiden Margherita and the mythic Helen of Troy. Joseph Colaneri is on the podium to conduct this electrifying score, which thrills with its towering choral depictions of both heaven and hell.
