What is Met Opera on Demand?

Met Opera on Demand is the online streaming service that allows users to watch and listen to more than 900 Met performances over the internet.

This online streaming catalog includes HD videos (from the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series of worldwide cinema transmissions), classic telecasts (standard-definition videos that were originally broadcast live on television from 1977-2003), and radio broadcast (audio-only) performances dating back to 1935 (from the Met’s long-running series of Saturday matinee radio broadcasts as well as more recent satellite radio broadcasts.)

Subscribers to Met Opera on Demand enjoy unlimited access, anywhere in the world, to everything available through the service. Met Opera on Demand is now available and accessible on many of the most popular device and platforms, including: computers (desktop or laptop, directly through the Met website), tablets (iPad, Android, and Amazon Fire), mobile phones (iPhone and Android), Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung Smart TV, and Apple TV (app available for 4th gen devices and AirPlay in the free Met Opera on Demand iOS app for older models.)
How does the Free Trial work?

New users can explore everything available on Met Opera on Demand with a free, introductory 7-day trial. To begin, simply click “Start Your Free Trial”, log in to the Met website (or Register if you do not yet have an account), and provide a credit card to activate your free trial. Your credit card will not be charged at this time. If you do not cancel your trial before the end of 7 days, it will automatically convert to a Monthly subscription and the Met will charge your credit card $14.99/month until you choose to cancel. You may cancel the Free Trial or subscription at any time on the Met website, but please note that no refunds will be given.
How fast does my internet connection need to be?

A fast and reliable broadband internet connection is required for Met Opera on Demand. At a minimum, your download speed must be 1.5 mbps. For optimal playback, especially for HD videos, we recommend download speeds of at least 5 mbps. Faster download speeds will ensure a better playback experience on all devices currently supported by Met Opera on Demand.
Can I watch on my TV?

Yes. Met Opera on Demand is now available on Apple TV (4th gen), Roku, Samsung Smart TV, and Amazon Fire TV.

Users may also connect the Met Opera on Demand iOS app to Apple TV using AirPlay and the Met Opera on Demand Android app to Chromecast. Additionally, it may be possible to connect your computer directly to your TV with an HDMI cable.
Is Met Opera on Demand available and accessible outside the US?

Yes, Met Opera on Demand is available worldwide. Please note, however, that a small number of specific performances are only available through the Met Opera on Demand website (and not any of the apps/other platforms) in certain countries. Please refer to the list of Limited Availability Titles for more information.
Can I watch live performances on Met Opera on Demand?

No. All of the content available for streaming on Met Opera on Demand is pre-recorded. The Live in HD performance transmissions to cinemas around the world are only viewable at participating cinemas, and are not simultaneously streamed live on Met Opera on Demand (or anywhere else online.) However, most of the Live in HD presentations are made available for streaming on Met Opera on Demand within 3-6 months of their live transmission date.
How often is new content added?

New content is added every month, and a monthly email is sent to subscribers to announce new releases. (Please verify your Email Preferences to ensure that these updates reach you.) Most Live in HD presentations are added to the Met Opera on Demand streaming catalog 3-6 months after their live transmission date. Additionally, many radio broadcasts from the current season are made available on Met Opera on Demand soon after their live broadcast dates as well.
Are subtitles available?

Yes. All Met Opera on Demand videos offer English subtitles and most HD videos also offer subtitles in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and/or Swedish. Users can select available subtitles (or choose to turn them off) via a Subtitles menu available with the basic player controls on all Met Opera on Demand devices/platforms. Subtitles are not currently available for the audio-only (radio broadcast) performances available on Met Opera on Demand.
How do I cancel my subscription?

You may cancel your subscription at any time by visiting the Manage Subscription page. You must be logged in to see the Manage Subscription link in the drop-down menu that appears with your username on top of the Met Opera on Demand homepage. All cancellations (including the Free 7-day Trial) can only be processed online on the Manage Subscription page. Please do not contact customer support for cancellation requests. Please note, all payments are final and no refunds will be given. Subscriptions purchased through Amazon, iTunes or Roku must be cancelled through Amazon, iTunes, or Roku; the Met cannot cancel In-App Purchase subscriptions with Amazon, Apple, or Roku on your behalf.
Why am I having problems with video playback?

If you encounter problems with video playback - such as freezing or stuttering, poor picture quality, or error messages - please refer to the Troubleshooting Quick Tips on the FAQs page for suggestions on how to check your internet connection, update your browser, and more. Assuming your hardware and internet connection meet the site's requirements, most playback problems can be resolved with a few adjustments.
