Donizetti
Lucia di Lammermoor
In adapting Sir Walter Scott’s Romantic novel The Bride of Lammermoor for the operatic stage, Donizetti crafted a thrilling drama replete with gripping intrigue and vocal fireworks, all culminating in a chilling mad scene for the title character. In this performance, soprano Olga Peretyatko-Mariotti is Lucia, the young woman driven insane by her brother’s selfish ambition, opposite exuberant tenor Vittorio Grigolo as her lover Edgardo. Baritone Massimo Cavalletti sings Enrico, who believes that only his sister’s arranged marriage can save his family’s honor and restore its fortunes, and bass Vitalij Kowaljow is the compassionate Raimondo. Conductor Gareth Morrell leads the Met Orchestra and Chorus in one of the most beloved of all bel canto operas.
