Catán
Florencia en el Amazonas
Inspired by the magical realism of novelist Gabriel García Márquez, Daniel Catán’s Florencia en el Amazonas made history as only the third Spanish-language opera ever presented at the Met when it had its company premiere during the 2023–24 season. At the opera’s heart is the diva Florencia Grimaldi, who travels on a riverboat through the Amazon Rainforest en route to a performance at the grand opera house in Manaus—but secretly also in search of her lover, Cristóbal, a butterfly hunter lost in the jungle. In this performance from the Live in HD series of cinema transmissions, Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads a mesmerizing production by Mary Zimmerman, which employs stunning scenery, costumes, and puppetry to evoke the wonders of the natural world. Soprano Ailyn Pérez stars as Grimaldi, alongside a winning ensemble as her fellow passengers aboard the steamship El Dorado.
