Legendary punk-rock queen Patti Smith has been a serious opera fan for years and can often be seen at the Met for opening nights, production premieres, and other performances. She’s even lent her voice to Met TV campaigns and has been interviewed a number of times on the company’s round-the-clock channel on Sirius XM. The 2017–18 season features no fewer than three of her five favorite operas, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and—her number one—Parsifal.
For me, the Met is cultural, spiritual. It’s the church of music. The very first moment you walk in, it’s like walking into a jewel box—there’s always treasure at the Met. When you see all the red and the curtains and the chairs and all of the people and feel the expectation—I just feel like I’m in a whole other place and time. It’s a wonderful New York experience, but it’s also a celestial experience for me. It encompasses the universe.
