Gounod
Faust
Plácido Domingo (Faust) sells his soul to the Devil (Giorgio Tozzi) for another chance at youth. He immediately falls in love with Marguerite (Teresa Zylis-Gara), gets her pregnant, and then leaves—infuriating her brother Valentin (Mario Sereni) when he gets home from the war. A very young Frederica von Stade is Siebel, a local lad who’s also in love with Marguerite. With a cast like this singing Gounod’s score with passion and style, it’s no wonder Faust is an operatic staple.
