Now one of the world’s greatest dramatic tenors, Jonas Kaufmann began his career at the Met singing some of the repertoire’s more lyrical roles, including Prince Tamino in Mozart’s mystical fairy tale Die Zauberflöte. In this radio broadcast, Kaufmann stars alongside baritone Nathan Gunn as the colorful bird catcher Papageno, soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian as the virtuous Princess Pamina, soprano Erika Miklósa as the hair-raising Queen of the Night, and bass Stephen Milling as the benevolent Sarastro. Scott Bergeson takes the podium to conduct the enchanting score, which overflows with some of the composer’s most sublime—and whimsical—melodies.
