Position Summary

The Met is committed to enhancing diversity among employees, artists, creative teams, composers, board, and audiences; offering equitable opportunities; and creating and sustaining an environment of belonging. Given the complex and difficult history of race and ethnicity at the Met and in the world of opera, they are particularly committed to being an anti-racist organization and addressing issues of equity and belonging with regard to race and ethnicity. The Chief Diversity Officer is a newly created role to address these historical, systemic and cultural challenges and lead the Met and the art form into the next chapter.

Reporting to the General Manager, the Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) will play a critical leadership role to foster an inclusive workplace that not only values and is responsive to the diversity of staff and the audiences it serves, but elevates all voices and identities across its work on stage and off. The CDO will build the Met's internal capacity to ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are central tenets of the institution and are embedded across the organization. Ultimately, the CDO will be responsible for setting and executing short and long-term strategies that ensure employees have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge around mission-critical elements of DEI and that all identities feel a sense of belonging at the institution. Additionally, the CDO will play a critical role in supporting the Met's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion across all artistic programming and audience engagement initiatives

Primary Responsibilities:

Organizational Leadership:

  • Conduct annual comprehensive compensation analysis to address and implement equitable pay practices and philosophies
  • Develop strategic diverse recruitment initiatives to attract and retain employees and interns with multicultural backgrounds
  • Promote inclusion among the Met leaders at all levels, including board, to encourage use of inclusive behaviors and language
  • Design and implement professional development opportunities for employees, including BIPOC employees to foster a climate of equity and inclusion
  • Enhance equity and anti-discrimination training programs at all levels of the organization designed to increase awareness and support equity and inclusion values
  • Examine the Board's by-laws and process to eliminate any inequitable protocols and implement new blueprint that promotes a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion

Artistic Leadership:

  • Address barriers to diversity in the art form, enhancing opportunities for under-represented groups at the Met and in the broader opera community, including women and people of color, in all the creative disciplines
  • Assess decision-making protocols and implement strategies to ethically and responsibly produce operas that are problematic in their representation of race, ethnicity, gender, etc.
  • Advise on equitable hiring and recruitment practices to improve the Met's casting practices and audition processes for performers, musicians, and Young Artists
  • Establish guidelines and best practices to ensure auditions, rehearsal rooms and the stage are safe and inclusive spaces being mindful of existing power dynamics

External Leadership:

  • Collaborate with the Assistant General Manager, Marketing & Communications to enhance efforts to engage diverse audiences for all works including mainstage live performances, cinema program, education program, and in the Met's social media presence
  • Support the marketing and partnership team with developing relevant perspectives and community engagements to increase brand visibility among diverse audiences
  • Develop strategic programming (live and digital forums) to initiate dialogue with diverse communities
  • Support the education team with ongoing efforts to develop relevant programs for students of color, LGBTQ students, and students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds

Qualifications & Skill Requirements:

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Minimum of ten years of experience advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in a complex organization with multi-leveled structure
  • Working knowledge of the performing or visual arts with a commitment to equity and inclusivity, ideally with an understanding of opera and its unique components and qualities
  • Understand, be sensitive to, and respect the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disabilities and sexual orientation of employees, interns, production staff, administration and leaders; fostering collaboration and consensus building
  • Degree in social justice, post-secondary education, fine or performing or visual arts, sociology, social anthropology, public administration, human resources management or other related field; or commensurate with experience
  • Demonstrated ability to provide strategic leadership and develop policy and procedure related to program initiatives
  • Effectively communicate both in writing and verbally; excellent at public speaking
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a professional demeanor during emotionally charged, difficult, or high pressure situations, defuse anger and establish or restore harmony
