Strauss’s epic fairy tale of two couples caught in a struggle of love, trust, and deception comes to life in this vivid performance that stars Johanna Meier and Robert Schunk as the mythical Empress and Emperor of the spirit world, opposite James Courtney and Janis Martin as their human counterparts, the goodhearted dyer and his beautiful wife. Helga Dernesch is the diabolical Nurse and Franz Mazura makes a cameo as the Spirit Messenger. Christof Perick leads the Met Orchestra in one of opera’s most sumptuous and colorful scores.
