When an elderly, miserly bachelor marries a smart young woman, there’s always trouble ahead. In Donizetti’s version of the ancient story that trouble is the source of unending humor and delight for the audience—doubly so when the great singing actor Salvatore Baccaloni (in his first Met season) is the old curmudgeon, Don Pasquale. Of course, with the ever-enchanting Bidu Sayão as the bride, who could blame him for falling in love? This is witty vocal acting at its best.
