Under James Levine’s exuberant and stylish leadership, Mozart’s rollicking tale has seldom been such a delight. At the head of the cast is Kurt Moll as the cantankerous harem overseer Osmin. Moll revels in the over-the-top music Mozart wrote to express Osmin’s over-the-top emotional jags. Uwe Heilmann (Belmonte) is the Spanish nobleman who must outwit Osmin in order to rescue his beloved Konstanze (Mariella Devia) from the clutches of Pasha Selim (Nico Castel).
