Casting Update News

Ana María Martínez will sing Cio-Cio-San in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly on February 27 and March 5, replacing Hei-Kyung Hong, who is ill and has withdrawn from the run of performances. The Met thanks Los Angeles Opera for releasing Martínez to sing these performances.

Casting for the role on March 2 will be announced at a later date.

Last week, Martínez made an acclaimed Met role debut as Cio-Cio-San in this season’s opening performances of Madama Butterfly. She has sung the role with numerous leading opera companies around the world, including the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, Vienna State Opera, Munich Opera Festival, Houston Grand Opera, and Washington National Opera. Martínez made her Met debut in 2005 as Micaëla in Bizet’s Carmen and returned earlier this season to sing Musetta in Puccini’s La Bohème. She will sing Cio-Cio-San at Los Angeles Opera this March and Elisabeth de Valois in Verdi’s Don Carlo at San Francisco Opera this summer.

These performances of Madama Butterfly are conducted by Karel Mark Chichon and also star Roberto De Biasio (February 27) and Gwyn Hughes Jones (March 2 and 5) as Pinkerton, Maria Zifchak as Suzuki, and Artur Rucinski as Sharpless.
