Don Giovanni

Approximate running time 3 hrs. 25 min.

The librettist da Ponte based Don Giovanni on several earlier versions of the Don Juan legend, especially plays by Tirso, Molière, Goldoni and an opera by Gazzaniga that had recently been heard in Venice. But Mozart’s music (written in 1787) eclipsed all these, and audiences were quickly drawn to the powerful drama and to the character of Giovanni. Though we actually never see him successfully seduce a woman (Leporello’s catalogue aria details his master’s 2065 conquests to date!), we admire his audacity in defying fate by inviting to dinner the statue of a man he had just murdered.
