Les Contes d'Hoffmann
Approximate running time 3 hrs. 25 min.
Matthew Polenzani plays the tortured poet and unwitting adventurer of the title, opposite Audrey Luna, Susanna Phillips, Elena Maximova as the three heroines. Laurent Naouri sings the Four Villains, and Music Director James Levine conducts Offenbach's sparkling score.
Matthew Polenzani gives "a vocally compelling and emotionally rich account of a challenging [title] role... [He] brings plenty of power to Hoffmann, capped by exciting high notes and outpourings of anguish." (New York Times)
"The brilliant coloratura soprano Audrey Luna is sensational as Olympia, deftly dispatching passagework and tossing off jet-propulsion high notes. The mezzo-soprano Elena Maximova's warm, textured voice is beautifully suited to Giulietta... The soprano Susanna Phillips [as Antonia] sings with melting sound and impassioned expressivity... The baritone Laurent Naouri brings a robust voice and consummate French style to the four devilish villains." (New York Times)
James Levine leads "a supple and insightful account" of the score that "has long been a Levine specialty. He conveys the beguiling, lighter elements of the music while drawing intensity, depth and glowing sound from the orchestra when the drama turns fraught." (New York Times)
