INTERMISSIONS

Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg

Approximate running time 6 hrs. 0 min.

James Levine returns to Wagner with a signature run of this epic comedy, back at the Met for the first time in eight years. James Morris and Michael Volle share the central role of Hans Sachs. Johan Botha reprises his indomitable Walther, and the elegant Annette Dasch is Eva.

Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg "offered an excellent cast... and the magnificent Met Orchestra and Chorus... [James Levine's] depth of insight, his feeling for the flow and shape of the score, and his attention to inner details were all impressive." (New York Times)

James Morris as Hans Sachs "brought enormous dramatic authority and richness of character to his affecting portrayal... The powerful tenor Johan Botha has excelled in the demanding role of Walther... Annette Dasch's bright, focused voice suits Eva beautifully... She was beguiling in the role... As her father, Pogner, the bass Hans-Peter König was terrific." (New York Times)

"The world of grand opera is generally not known for its comedies, and few are quite as grand, funny or poignant as the Metropolitan Opera's magnificent production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg... In an impressive Met debut, the German baritone Johannes Martin Kränzle is hilarious as the buffoon Beckmesser." (Huffington Post)
