Enrico Caruso famously said that putting on Trovatore was easy: the only thing needed were the four best singers in the world. Few people would take issue with the sensational cast of this broadcast: The radiant superstar Joan Sutherland, in her last operatic appearance at the Met, is Leonora, the young woman loved by two men—the outlaw Manrico (Luciano Pavarotti in spectacular form), and the noble but sinister Count di Luna (commanding Verdi baritone Leo Nucci). Between them, and at the center of the drama, stands the mysterious gypsy Azucena (the late, great Shirley Verrett), whose actions years before throw a long shadow over the protagonists’ lives.
