The Challenges of Singing Wagner's Ring | The Ring Minisite

Along with stars Deborah Voigt and Jay Hunter Morris, a number of alumni from last season’s Ring cycles are returning for the 2013 spring run—including Katarina Dalayman as Brünnhilde, Stephanie Blythe as Fricka, Gerhard Siegel as Mime, Eric Owens as Alberich, and Hans-Peter König as Hunding, Fafner, and Hagen. But the cast also features several notable newcomers.

 MArtina Serafin   Martina Serafin, soprano
Vienna, Austria
Makes her Met debut with this production, in a role she has sung to acclaim in Paris, Zurich, and Tokyo. Calling-card roles include Tosca and the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier, which she will sing at the Met next season.
 Meredith Arwady   Meredith Arwady, mezzo-soprano
Kalamazoo, Michigan
Has sung a wide repertoire from Handel to Stravinsky throughout the U.S. and appeared as Erda at the Frankfurt Opera. A 2004 National Council Auditions winner who made her Met debut in 2008 in John Adams’s Doctor Atomic.
 Lars Cleveman   Lars Cleveman, Tenor
Stockholm, Sweden
Has sung both Siegfried and Siegmund in the Ring, Erik in Der Fliegende Holländer, Tristan in Tristan und Isolde, and the title role of Parsifal at various European opera houses, as well as the title role of Tannhäuser at the Bayreuth Festival. Makes his Met debut with these performances.
 Simon O'Neil   Simon O’Neill, tenor
Timaru, New Zealand
Appeared as Siegmund in the Met’s previous Ring production and has also sung the role at La Scala, Covent Garden, and the Berlin and Hamburg State Opera. Sang Walther in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at Covent Garden and the title roles of Lohengrin and Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival.
 Mark Delavan   Mark Delavan, baritone
Princeton, New Jersey
Wotan / Wanderer
Was heard as Wotan and the Wanderer in San Francisco and at Berlin’s Deutsche Oper and has also sung the title role of Der Fliegende Holländer. Has appeared at the Met in more than 60 performances of 11 roles since his 2001 debut as Amonasro in Aida, including Gianciotto in Francesca da Rimini earlier this season.
 Greer Grimsley   Greer Grimsley, baritone
Morrisville, Pennsylvania
Wotan / Wanderer
Has sung Wotan and the Wanderer in Seattle, Berlin, Venice, Cologne, and Shanghai. Other Wagner roles include Telramund in Lohengrin, Kurwenal in Tristan und Isolde (both of which he has sung at the Met), Amfortas in Parsifal, and the title role of Der Fliegende Holländer.
