What is the Metropolitan Opera Guild and what is its function?

The Metropolitan Opera Guild was founded in 1935 by Eleanor Robson Belmont as an ancillary organization to help support the Metropolitan Opera. The Guild has its own board of directors, and engages in educational and public programs for audiences of all ages, and publishes Opera News magazine, the world’s largest opera publication. The Guild’s managing director is Stewart Pearce, its chairman of the board is Winthrop Rutherfurd, Jr., and its president is Richard J. Miller.

How many employees does the Met have?

The Met employs approximately 3,400 employees. This includes 1,600 full time and seasonal employees, with 1,800 part time. Solo artists number about 300, there are 100 regular orchestra members, and 80 regular chorus members. Each of these groups is augmented according to seasonal needs.

What is the top fee for artists?

For the 2010 - 2011 season, the top artist fee was $16,000 per performance. An interesting comparison is Caruso’s fee of $2,500 per performance about the time of World War I.

What programs does the Met have to promote new talent?

The Met has two major programs that foster new talent. The Lindemann Young Artist Development Program provides intensive preparation for up to three years for a limited number of artists who are between the conservatory and professional stages of a career. Second, the Metropolitan Opera National Council sponsors annual auditions in 16 regions where they hear approximately 2,000 singers from whom semi-finalists and finalists are chosen to compete on the Met stage in a Grand Finals Concert accompanied by the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.
