Position Summary

The Met is seeking an individual to be our Press Associate in our Marketing and Communications Department.  Responsibilities for this position include implementing fundamental publicity functions including interviews and photo and video shoots, and support for all press activities, especially the promotion of the mainstage season. The Press Associate also provides essential support for both the Director of Communications and Press Director.

Primary Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (other duties may be assigned as needed)


  • Primary responsibility for answering incoming calls from press during working hours
  • Primary responsibility for answering/routing incoming email to general press inbox
  • Replies to press ticket requests and assigns seating to journalists for all performances
  • Acts as Office Manager; orders supplies and monitors office equipment


Public Relations 

  • Conducts publicity outreach for specific projects related to the Met, including select special events, product releases, brand partnerships, etc.
  • Works with PR staff to create story ideas and target media lists to promote Met performances
  • Develops relationships with classical music and other press through phone, email, and in-person interactions
  • Coordinates logistical details for on- and off-site interviews with Met artists and staff
  • Point person for set-up and monitoring of in-house filming and photo shoots, including notification of all relevant parties and unions
  • Tracks cross-department coverage plans and progress for internal reporting
  • Performance Press Duty: interfaces directly with press before performances and at intermissions to provide information and answer questions (approximately one performance per week throughout the opera season)

Qualifications and Skill Requirements

  • 1-3 years experience in public relations, ideally with an arts organization
  • Excellent communication skills: verbal, writing, editing
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good computer skills
  • Basic knowledge of today’s opera world and its leading figures
  • Patient, pleasant, and professional demeanor; understanding of artistic needs
  • Willingness to help in a variety of unpredictable situations
  • Desire to grow professionally as an institutional arts publicist
  • Must be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed
