A number of acclaimed sopranos have appeared as Tatiana, the heroine of Tchaikovsky’s passionate coming-of-age masterpiece, at the Met, with the supple-voiced soprano Mirella Freni, celebrated for her mastery of the Italian and French repertoire, appearing in the role 11 times during her Met career—including in this unforgettable performance conducted by maestro Seiji Ozawa. She stars alongside an ensemble of favorite Met artists, including tenor Jerry Hadley as the idealistic poet Lensky and bass Nicolai Ghiaurov as Tatiana’s dignified husband, Prince Gremin. And, having made his Met debut only days earlier, Russian baritone Sergei Leiferkus completes the cast as the self-assured title character, who discovers too late his great love for Tatiana.
